See the Future
of the Voyeur Site with Toshiba
- by Eric J. White, aka EmporerEJ
While I was walking through the exhibits at Internext, I saw the
familiar "Toshiba" logo on a sign. In our industry, anytime you
see a "mainstream" company exhibiting openly at an adult event
it gets more than a passing glance. They were positioned off by
themselves, prominently at the end of the row. As I approached,
I expected to see a company name as a dealer of Toshiba products.
But to my surprise, the salesman handed me an official Toshiba
corporate business card. I mentioned my surprise to him and said,
"Toshiba the electronics company is actually here openly exhibiting
their new camera product at an adult show?" |

Will RSS Overtake E-mail?
- by Theresa Lütge-Smith
Many Internet pundits and researchers are thinking the unthinkable
- that e-mail may be on its way out as the current most effective
source of content delivery and publishing over the Internet. It
seems like only yesterday that e-mail was touted as the Internet
'killer app' - the ultimate means of communication and a cheap,
effective marketing tool. But spam and virus scripts have considerably
dented the shining light of e-mail functionality, and many users
are beginning to look for an alternative to e-mail to facilitate
smoother online communication and a spam-free transmission of
knowledge and information. The answer, some claim, lies with RSS
news feeds... |

The Future is Now
- A.I. Joins the Adult 'Net Workforce
- by Kath Blackwell
Ever wish you could clone yourself? It may seem as if the next
logical progression would be from from virtual cybersex, to artificially
intelligent superhumans working as assistants to webmasters, but
believe it or not A.I. is just beginning to make big breakthroughs
in the adult Web. According to the creator of the virtual beings
at SexyPimpbot.com, programmer Monica Lamb says that her A.I.
Virtual Humans work well "for any situation where a company or
individual needs a truly innovative solution..." |

Making Money with PHP
- by Rinat Gersch, Zend.com
The dynamic PHP-based elements of an adult site are often the
most mission-critical. Not only does performance affect your operating
costs, it also reflects directly on the end-user experience. Whether
PHP is used to serve member's pages, in the sign-up process or
in the user tracking system, its speed is directly correlated
with the bottom line. This article lets the experts tell their
tale. Read how adult companies use PHP and Zend to cut down on
operational costs while significantly improving their programs,
and make more $$ for themselves and their partners... |

Securing Your Future
with DRM - by Christopher Levy
The Adult Internet Industry is a very similar business - and larger
brands devouring market share. Like the Music business, the Adult
Internet industry stands to suffer from widespread theft and piracy.
Last year I was quoted in ABCNews.com as saying it is a billion
dollar industry. I think it's more. Much, much more, and its primary
product is one that is easily stolen or re-shared. Since the events
of September 11th put this country on a security binge, DRM has
been a buzzword in the press and media, which is not to say DRM
is not an effective security product... |

The Modern Imperative
- by Theresa Lütge-Smith
The tools and connectivity of the digital age give us a way to
easily obtain, share and act on information. Standard hardware
combines with standard software platforms, creating economies
of scale that make powerful computing solutions available to companies
of all sizes. However, this new Web work style requires a well
organized digital infrastructure that ensures an integrated flow
of information to the right part of the organization at the right
time; enables a company to perceive and react to its environment;
senses competitor challenges and customer needs... |

Broadband
and the Future of Networked Computing
-
by Theresa Lütge-Smith
The Nielsen/NetRatings recently reported that broadband usage
reached the critical 50 percent benchmark at the start of
this year. People with high-speed connections accounted for
51 percent of the 2.3 billion hours that Americans spent online
during January. The important aspect that these statistics
highlight is the balance between narrowband and broadband,
which has been tipped in favor of broadband usage. This boils
down to the fact that people who use the Internet from high-speed
connections spent more time online than people with traditional
phone lines. This is important news... |

The Marriage
of a Coder and a Webmaster -
by Susanna Strandberg
All sorts of scripts have become available to webmasters to
make their lives much easier. Timesaving devices that truly
work always fascinate me. Therein lies the catch 22. I have
not seen too many scripts that did not have a catch 22. A
script can build 1000 sites a day, but you have to hand submit
them because there is no safe and effective method for the
script to handle that. A script can make 1000 thumbnail gallery
pages and auto submit them, but you have to contend with the
thumbnail gallery sites that dislike auto submitters and constantly
move their forms... |

The Portable
Database - by Tim Schaefer
Last time I wrote about a feature of Perl that you can use
to set up Perl to behave just like a web browser in your Perl
program, using the LWP modules. This time around I want to
extend that concept and show you the power of LWP again, using
it for database connectivity with your website. I also want
to talk to you about building your membership database with
the MySQL database engine on Linux. If you aren't familiar
with this little gem of software you should be. When you combine
the two, Perl and MySQL, you have just about everything you
need to building scalable databases for your websites... |

Using LWP Modules
with Perl - by Tim Schaefer
Have you ever wanted to be able to pull something off of one
Web site and use it in a program for your Web site? The only
way it seems possible is to have some kind of macro-type program
doing repetitive tasks through a web browser, but maybe, just
maybe if you had a program that would act like a web browser
you would be able to do much more than simply play keystrokes.
Macro programs have their uses but can often lead to a lot
of frustration and extra work... |

Printer-Friendly
Pages using PHP/JavaScript -
by TDavid, TDScripts.com
I must admit I still print things out, and store them for
manual reference. The Web reality of making a printer-friendly
version of every webpage and leaving them all static on your
website, just isn't very practical in the long run (you'd
have to update the same page twice). So, let's use some creative
scripting so we can simply pass a few variables to a script,
and dynamically produce a printer-friendly webpage, or allow
surfers to print a particular section of the page in printer-friendly
format. I will also demonstrate how to combine JavaScript
and PHP to make a useful script... |

Make Security
Job-Number-One with Your ASP
Due to the nature of the ASP model, security considerations
are more complex and even more critical than with the in-house
case. Under the ASP model, software applications are installed
in a remote facility that is basically outside of the customer's
control, and access to the hosted resources is provided exclusively
through the Internet. This differs significantly from the
traditional model where software is licensed and installed
on your own machines, in your own facility, and accessed through
your own network, protected by whatever security you provide
yourself... |

Advanced
Rollovers - by Greg Mansfield
There is a lot more than one way to construct a rollover;
when working with Dreamweaver, you can create some really
interesting rollovers even if you have minimal knowledge of
javascript (javascript is the language used in html to produce
many dynamic effects). This tutorial will show you how to
create rollovers for images other than the one with the MouseOver
attribute. Before you start, you will need 4 images, placed
into an images folder where your html document is. They don't
need to look exactly like mine, just make a button with a
rollover and an extra image with a rollover... |

Why Software Innovations Work - by ToteMach, TotemCash.com
Risk takers in the adult industry are those who are prepared to do something outside the box, in the hope that their difference will make them stand out from the crowd. That's no easy feat in any industry, especially the adult online biz, however, products such as 3D adult games, virtual sex videos and real-life strippers on computer desktops are doing just that... |
